For once the lack of posts isn't due to lack of motivation. My hosting provider updated some software on their server and it caused a bit of a glitch in my website. I was unable to create any new posts. I think it has been finally worked out but should any of you folks run across a problem, please let me know so that I can follow up with the server hosts.
Anyway...on with my post. This weekend my mother came for a visit as she is in serious "Whohead" withdrawal mode. Her visits are never long enough simply because she is so good at helping to get and or keep me motivated to do stuff around the house. This trip she really wanted to get the office finished. It sounded like a good idea but we ran out of time. She did however manage to get all the nail holes and splits fixed on the baseboards that I removed. All I have to do it give them a light sanding and they can be reattached and painted.
Speaking of painting, I finally got over and got the trim paint for the kitchen. I have decided to use the same color on all painted trim work in the downstairs with the exception of the bathroom. It is
Sherwin Williams White Hyacinth off the historic preservation pallet. It's a soft creamy white that blends well with the yellow undertones in the green. It also warms up the room a bit. My mom got the moldings painted most of the baseboards in the kitchen done. I still have the windows and cabinets to finish but am completely blown away by how good the room looks with just that little bit done.
You may ask what I was doing while all this was going on. The truth is I am on some new medication and it has made me very tired. The biggest problem is it makes you tired but then causes insomnia...so having my mom here was great just to keep the house from crumbling down around me while I get used to the new meds. I did however make my first foray in to electrical improvements.
As the title of this post indicates the 80's have been banished. That means the horrible ceiling fan in my kitchen is GONE! Several months ago I purchased a new light fixture for both the living room and the dining room. I have no electrical experience and since the house is an electrical nightmare to begin with I have been very wary about making any changes without a professional present. I finally couldn't stand looking at my beautiful new green kitchen with that monstrosity in it any longer. After doing a bit of research I discovered the the fixture I had selected for the living room would also be a good choice for the kitchen as well (it's a mission style reproduction).
So Sunday afternoon I decided to give it a shot. I manged to get the ceiling fan down without a problem. But there were 3 wires coming from the house instead of 2. I managed to select the ones I
thought were the right ones and capped the third wire. We got the fixture all mounted and it was PERFECT. That is until we tried to turn the light off. It turned out the wire I had capped was the wire that the light switch controlled. The wire that I used to connect power to the switch was the one that had powered the ceiling fan. Which ment that it was controlled by a pull cord on the fan itself. So at 10 o'clock at night we had to take the whole thing apart and rewire it so that we could turn off the light. It may have been a pain to deal with...but the finished results were SOOO worth it!
