After removing the ceiling fan from my kitchen and putting up the new one I figured I was safe to try and update the fixture in the office. There was a ceiling fan in that room with no light so I figured I might have a pretty good chance of getting a new fixture installed with a bit more ease that the last one. I removed the ceiling fan and was in luck as there were only two wires...one white, one black. I got it all installed and put in a light bulb and threw the power switch. LIGHT!
CRAP! Upon re-entering the office I looked over at the light switch and discovered it was turned off. At first I figured someone had installed it upside down. No luck...the switch doesn't control the overhead light at all. A friend of ours who knows a bit about electrical said that replacing the light switch may solve the problem as it may be faulty and has been bypassed. Bypassed? Instead of fixed?! How rediculous is it to have a wall switch and NOT have it control the fixture on the ceiling...or anything else for that matter!
For the time being I have just pulled out the light bulb and figure I'll wait til someone who knows what they are doing can come take a look at it.
I have to do some repair work on the ceiling around the fixture anyway. The patch work the POs have done falls under the "what were they thinking category".
